Abstract

1860's in New Caledonia launched a century-long surge in texts depict mining, its organization, its management structure, the life of miners and their activities, and conflicts relating to social categories. Drawing upon the novels and short stories of Mariotti, this paper focuses particularly on Jules Garnier and his travel diaries, the short stories of Baudoux and his "Chansons des Cobaleurs". This paper questions what specific language is recreated by these literary texts? How do these texts handle the miners' argot that once existed and that perhaps still exists today? The works bear witness to a part of the miners' imaginary that grew up specifically in New Caledonia's changing colonial ideology from 1853 to 1953: the concern of writing a "legend" or an "epic" and of participating in the grandeur of the French colonial empire. It is during this period that New Caledonian authors created the majority of terms and representations--notably, the pioneer--that still evoke the exploitation of the miner. In order to explore these realistic representations in a literary context, it is necessary to examine the text as a construct. Even the most apparently authentic testimonies stem from discursive fact that must be dismantled from the model that always portrays dynamic relationships. The evolution of the representations must in turn follow or anticipate historical change with a temporality that belongs to an imaginary and symbolic life rooted in human collectivities.
